Success Story

Dildo Brewing Company

“This is a smaller brewery, but we're looking to expand in a pretty significant way. So, it's key to see what kinds of beer we should be putting all our eggs behind as we grow, and Ekos gives us enough data to make those decisions.”

- Kyle Jeppesen, head brewer

Dildo Brewing Company & Museum came to be after a pair of siblings and their spouses decided they wanted to open a brewery in their hometown of Dildo, Newfoundland in Canada. When it came to securing a location, however, the quartet eventually wound up with the perfect spot: a museum on the waterfront that couldn’t be maintained anymore. The group signed on and revamped the museum, which is centered on the nautical history of the area, in addition to the obvious change of adding a taproom and kitchen upstairs. Since opening in 2018, the group has kept the museum running strong in the summertime by employing local students, the same way it’s always been run, and amplified its reach by welcoming tourists and locals alike.

When Kyle Jeppesen joined Dildo Brewing as head brewer in May 2021, the team had not implemented any standard processes for inventory and were relying on spreadsheets for their production data. As a long-time Ekos user (going on seven years!), Kyle knew the best bet for creating success in the brewhouse and in their stockroom was his trusty pal Ekos.

Kyle now has “everything under one roof” with Ekos, giving Dildo Brewing Company an edge on their production capacity. Kyle has trained up four employees at the brewery to use Ekos, which means he always knows where his beer is and what’s happening to it. When the team was relying on spreadsheets, that level of visibility was impossible. “Being able to walk from vessel to vessel collecting parameters, whether it’s in the cellar or during brewing or packaging, we just have a tablet so we can collect real-time data,” he said. “Ekos is set up very well to just move through the process in real time.”

All of the data and reporting in Ekos empowers Kyle and the brewing team to shoot for the moon. Comparing beer sales, packaging breakdowns, and production by month, week, and year means he can make accurate plans for his production capacity, which he expects to grow this year. “This is a smaller brewery, but we’re looking to expand in a pretty significant way,” Kyle said. “It’s key to see what kinds of beer we should be putting all our eggs behind as we grow, and Ekos gives us enough data to make those decisions.” This growing pool of data didn’t come without hard work, however. “Ekos as a software is great, but it’s really only as good as the users and their ability to input data and follow along with it,” he said. “Ekos is really good for having a lot of information at our disposal to share with employees.” Plus, the customer service Kyle’s team gets from Ekos means their experience is seamless. Kyle says the Customer Success team and Technical Support folks have been super responsive to any hurdles they run into.

On top of running the brewing operations at Dildo Brewing Company, Kyle is also a consultant — helping new breweries with everything from grains to glass. He says the one consistent recommendation he has for new breweries from day one is simple: get Ekos. “If you’re starting a brewery but you’re not really sure about the processes of how you run a brewery, Ekos is a really good investment because it actually lays out the sales process, production flow, and general workflow,” Kyle said. “Ekos helps new brewery owners learn as well as keep their shit together.” Plus, implementing Ekos helps Kyle help them — as someone who’s used the software for most of his professional career, he’s able to make recommendations and instill best practices for the oncoming brewer’s team. “Ekos provides clarity for the business owner — clarity on production and how the business is doing sales wise,” he said.

Dildo Brewing Company is planning for expansion this year — Kyle says that within one year, the brewery will be adding a third location. This spot will include a bigger taproom and brewhouse, and it will allow the brewery to focus more on production. While some brewers might worry about how they’ll stay organized during an expansion, Kyle feels confident that Ekos will keep their heads on straight. “That’ll be a really easy gap to bridge with Ekos because you can have multiple facilities across different locations,” Kyle said. Ekos is a piece of Kyle’s brewing process that can follow wherever he goes, and he’s looking forward to this growth. “Ekos has helped me develop my career and do my job more effectively,” he said.
